4 Questions We Get All The Time

Home remodeling is an extensive process that requires a great deal of time, a planned budget, and a variety of skilled tradespeople to carry out the work. It’s only natural that you have questions as a homeowner to ensure the most swift and trouble-free process. Whether you’re still looking for the best remodeler to partner with, or are in the midst of a home remodel, our list of four commonly asked questions will help to ease your worries about the remodeling process!

1. How long does a remodeling project usually take?

There are many factors that affect the construction period of a home. For example, how many rooms need to be remodeled? Will new flooring need to be installed? What is the lead time for getting certain tile or lighting fixtures delivered? Will new cabinets need to be installed? What is the current weather/season like?

To determine the scope of how much work a certain room needs, we first divide the project into 1 of 3 categories: a refresh, an update, or a full remodel. Here is an average look at the remodeling times of a kitchen, the heart of the home, as an example.

A Refresh: 5-6 weeks
Mainly cosmetic changes with minor repairs; replacing outdated light fixtures; switching out old appliances; fresh coat of paint; minimal cabinet painting

An Update: 6-7 weeks
Working with the existing structure/layout with increased cosmetic changes; painting all cabinets; installing new tile for backsplash; refinishing/cleaning up the floors to appear new

A Full Remodel: 8-9 weeks
Significant changes to the layout through expansion or reconfiguration; a full gut; knocking down walls; moving plumbing; all new flooring to tie in new finishes; custom island and new countertops; all new finishes like hardware, light fixtures, appliances, etc.

Example of a full remodel

Again, each project is different and may require more or less time based on the situation. However, this is a great starting point for you to get a gauge of how long a remodeling project could take in your home.

2. How much will a remodel cost me?

We understand that budgets are integral so we wanted to address this question to provide some education and understanding! The easy answer, It’s more than what HGTV makes it seem!

Each home project is dependent on scope, along with a few other factors that can affect the cost such as: the age of your home, the products you choose and square footage of the space.  When determining your budget for improving your space, consider the 3 categories we mentioned above.

A Refresh: ($) Most cost-effective option
An Update
: ($$) Halfway point
A Full Remodel: ($$$) High-cost option

Based on your budget and space, we work with you to determine the areas of your home that give you the most value, taking into consideration your style and what you want to achieve. Sometimes what a client thinks they want may be out of their budget, so we offer other ways to cut costs like refinishing floors rather than replacing, or installing a portion of open-shelving rather than cabinets. After meeting with you to walk through your home and discuss your needs, we provide you with a cost range, based on similar projects.

No matter your project scope, there are many features and benefits when working with a Design-Build company like us. Not only are we involved in demolition and construction, we are involved in every step of the design selections such as paint color, tile choice, hardware, flooring stain, cabinet style, etc. to ensure your space reflects top-notch design done right. We also offer problem-solving and space-saving design recommendations that you may have never even considered but will absolutely love!

Again, this is just a starting point that you can use to budget for your next remodel.

3) How do you tie in old and new?

A great question! Let’s say you have a budget that restricts remodeling everything in your home – we can’t all be millionaires right? If you are undergoing a kitchen remodel with a new style that differs from your current home, how do you blend together the styles of the adjacent rooms to keep your home looking cohesive?

Here are some things you can do to tie in the old and new:

  • Pull in some design elements of the new remodel into the adjacent room

    • Replace old hardware or light fixtures in the family room with a similar color/finish as the new ones in the kitchen

    • Freshen up the old walls with a paint color used in the new space

  • Pay attention to trim, windows, and doors

    • You don’t always have to paint every inch of these areas to blend in the new

    • Mixing different types of wood and metals can actually make a room interesting and dynamic

    • Consider selecting a few areas where trim, windows, and doors need to re-painted (or not) to instantly freshen up your space

  • Upgrade significant focal pieces, like a fireplace or statement lighting

    • Install a light fixture that is eye-catching and bold that matches the style of the new room

    • Install a new tile surround or simply paint outdated brick

    • Replace your mantle to instantly change the look of your fireplace
