Let's Talk Tile: Shape

Tile is an incredible design element because it has so many versatile looks and uses. It works well in large, open spaces such as using it to create a kitchen backsplash, or even in smaller spaces like creating feature floors in a bathroom or adding depth to a fireplace. No matter what kind of project you use it for, tile has the ability to instantly elevate your home and give it plenty of personality.

We’ve teamed up with MN Tile & Stone to give you a look into the tile trends that are currently in, and what is up-and-coming in home design. This first part of our “Let’s Talk Tile” series will cover tile shapes to give you inspiration in your next remodeling project.

Chevron tile is a classic shape that can be carried from season to season with its monochrome color and clean lines. In one of our recent home remodels in Medina, we used chevron tile to create a timeless kitchen backsplash for the homeowners. The unique, elongated shape also gives the illusion of a wider space. So if you’re going for a thoughtfully minimalistic look in your home, a touch of chevron is what you need. You can also opt for a chevron tile floor in a bathroom or shower space to create a polished and clean look.

2) Go Hexagonal

A hexagonal tile, also known as honeycomb tile, mimics the sweet structure of a bee’s natural home. As in natural honeycombs, the tessellation of these shapes create a truly impressive feature. In our Shorewood kitchen remodel for Sherry and Greg, we utilized ceramic hexagonal tiles in a white and black marble to create a unique ornamental design above the stove area. The use and combination of these shapes creates a memorable feature piece within the home.

One of the pros to using hexagonal tile is the creative flexibility to design unique geometric patterns or formations. Whether the tiles are placed in a symmetrical or asymmetrical design, the mosaic possibilities are endless and will be sure to impress.

3) Itsy-bitsy Pieces

Making its way to many home designs this year is the use of miniature tile pieces to construct accent pieces. The combination of large, simplistic tiles with smaller tile pieces brings out details in both shapes when they are paired together.  In this finished kitchen remodel for Tammy and Ted, we coupled a simple horizontal subway tile with panels of narrow, vertical tile. The combination of these two tile shapes and sizes works well to bring drama and excitement to the space. Small tiles have the ability to successfully highlight areas within your home with its tiny details. Use a varying color and textured herringbone tile to create a standout fireplace, a penny tile to create standout stripes, or a pebble tile in a shower to add dimension and luxury.
